Separation: When individuals become alienated from the host culture and separate themselves from the majority society.

  • Learners mainly prefer to socialize with persons from their own culture.

Individuals who select separation and integration fall between learning and lifeguarding in the cognitive process. The differing responses to acculturative stress naturally require different responses and techniques at varying intensities to decrease the multiple levels of acculturative stress. Research supports historical aspects of systemic racism and negative experiences with acculturation.
