Historical Impacts

Acculturative stress contributes to other negative outcomes outside of the academic environment. Acculturative stress contributes to homelessness, incarceration, increased rates of victimization, negative mental health outcomes, eating disorders, and marginalization through the lack of cultural responsiveness of mental health services to address acculturative stress.

Systemic culture creates barriers to equitable education. Higher education leaders need to address the issue of acculturative stress using a purposeful and genuine lens that fosters a sense of responsibility for the well-being of systematically marginalized and racialized populations attending institutions in the United States and abroad.
